Chic Destinations for a Weekend in the Mountains

Treating yourself to a weekend in the mountains can be the perfect solution to take a break, breathe fresh air, and return to everyday commitments completely refreshed.

Especially because, in this regard, Italy has nothing to envy to the rest of the world: our territory is indeed sprinkled with beautiful mountainous locations that can be reached by car in just a few hours from any point in the country. Like the destinations described in the following lines, perfect even for last-minute trips.

Lombardy is the most populous region in Italy and has the great advantage of offering continuous inspirations for those seeking a few days of relaxation: lakes, cities, and villages, but also mountain resorts where one can spend a weekend to escape from the world and the usual life filled with work and deadlines. Among the top three are Bormio, Livigno, and Ponte di Legno.

The first is the symbol of Valtellina: here, in winter, it is possible to indulge in sports such as skiing and snowboarding down its beautiful slopes. Throughout the year, however, it is the perfect wellness retreat where you can surrender to a few hours of relaxation thanks to its spas.

Livigno is the northernmost point of the region: it is a small town nestled among the peaks just before the Swiss border. Always a hub for trade, the Valdidentro area has become one of the most important ski destinations in Italy, but it also serves as a place to enjoy a fresh and relaxing break immersed in nature during the hottest summers.

Lastly, between the Stelvio National Park and the Adamello in Val Camonica lies Ponte di Legno, a popular tourist destination that, for this reason, offers various options to choose from: spas, luxurious experiences, as well as renowned shops and typical restaurants for a hearty serving of pizzoccheri.

Moving on to the northwest, the mountains of Veneto also present interesting options for a weekend of relaxation in the mountains. Heading northwest, the Aosta Valley is also an attractive option for a weekend in the mountains thanks to two of the most important peaks in Italy: the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc.

If you decide to visit this region, one of the must-do activities (besides trying Valdostan tegole) is visiting the Pré Saint Didier Spa, rich in relaxation rooms and naturally warm water pools that soften the skin and help circulation. These facilities are ideal for just one afternoon, as they are only a few minutes' drive from Courmayeur, the pearl of Mont Blanc, which, thanks to its cable car, allows reaching the roof of Europe at nearly four thousand meters high.

Unmissable in a list of Italian mountainous locations is the region of South Tyrol, particularly Südtirol, which, among other things, offers some of the best slopes for skiing, the most beautiful nature trails, and Lake Fiè, which, depending on the season, can serve as a rest stop and a surface for ice skating.

Bolzano is also worth a visit, as the provincial capital is rich in points of interest. From the cathedral decorated by Giotto's students, Piazza delle Erbe and its market, to the arcades with shops and cafes, Castle Firmiano, the nearby Rencio district, and Lake Carezza.
