Ten beautiful bays on Mallorca
© mauritius images / Hans Blossey For hikers: Cala Varques The sandy beach, just 80 metres wide, nestles picturesquely in the bay of Cala Varques. You won't find any hotels, cafés or shops here. Instead, dense forest surrounds the fine sandy beach near Porto Cristo, which can only be reached on foot. It is best to park in the car park on the main road Ma-4014 and walk the last part of the way from there. Families appreciate the shallow sand in the bay, climbers visit it because of the jagged rock faces and naturists find their place in another small bay, which is connected to Cala Varques by a coastal hiking trail.
Torres insured: On the trail we will still be able to marvel at countless border walls, terraces, houses, defence towers and stretches of path built with this technique. This is why the GR 221 is also known as the dry stone wall trail - Ruta de Pedra en Sec.
Wild coastal views again and again
For the rest of the day, the panoramic views of Mallorca's rugged west coast provide excitement. At the Mirador d'en Josep Sastre viewpoint, the cliff drops dramatically 450 metres into the sea.
In the evening, the stage destination is reached at the Finca Ses Fontanelles. The 200-year-old farmhouse has been transformed into an idyllic hiking hotel. Sheep graze under citrus trees. Peace and quiet return.
From Ses Fontanelles, the trail first climbs steeply for 200 metres through a lonely gorge. Wild goats seem surprised by human presence. The higher you climb, the more beautiful the view becomes over the wild coast and the Mediterranean.
The next stage destination, Banyalbufar, with its stone terraces, steep alleys and ochre-coloured sandstone houses, is one of the most beautiful villages in the Tramuntana. Banyalbufar means "built by the sea". The name comes from the Arab occupiers who created terraces here centuries ago for the cultivation of Malvasia wine.
Villages like a picture book
The next day, the path again winds through dark holm oak forests. After Esporles, the path leads up to the mountain ridge at an altitude of almost 600 metres. Soon the stage destination can be seen in the valley: Valldemossa, not for nothing the most visited village on the island.

The most beautiful village for many, however, is Deià. And the 13-kilometre-long stage to get there is one of the most beautiful on the GR 221. It first runs along a historic bridle path.
It climbs slowly up to the 938-metre-high Puig Gros. The descent to Deià is beautiful. The path leads dramatically along steep walls until olive grove terraces slowly flatten the terrain. Deià is Mallorca's artists' village. It has always attracted painters, poets and composers. Quite a few stayed at the hotel "La Residencia". The hostel is worth a visit just for its sculpture garden and around 800 works, mainly by local artists.
Past olive and citrus plantations
The day's walk to the port of Port de Sóller runs through endless olive tree plantations. In the gnarled, centuries-old trees on the Muleta Peninsula, you can make out goblins, faces and various animals. At the Cap Gros lighthouse, built in 1842, the path turns abruptly to the right and leads to the beautiful natural harbour of Sóller. And thus to the longed-for jump into the Mediterranean Sea.

The next morning begins in a relaxed and nostalgic way: the wooden-panelled tram, inaugurated in 1913, takes you from the beach promenade through citrus plantations to Sóller. The market hall is a good place to buy provisions for the long day's hike to the Tossals Verds refuge.
Mallorca can also be lonely
Shortly after the mountain village of Biniaraix, fitness is required. Through a lonely gorge, the trail climbs steeply in zigzags along dry stone paths. Almost 750 metres in altitude have to be climbed to the Coll de L'Ofre. The view back into the Orangental of Sóller: stunning.

Up in the high valley, the two reservoirs glisten in the sun. There is a smell of sage and herbs. Mallorca's highest mountain, the 1436-metre Puig Major, towers imposingly over the landscape. At the Tossals Verds mountain hut, you are far away from civilisation.
The monastery of Lluc down in the valley basin can be seen from afar. Mallorca's most important place of pilgrimage was founded in the 13th century. You can spend the night in the former monks' cells. As soon as the day tourists disappear, it becomes wonderfully quiet. Departure early in the morning.
Idyllic peace and masonry knocking
The chirping of birds is soothing. Suddenly, there's a loud knocking and hammering. Dry stone mason Damià González and his team are restoring a section of path that was destroyed by erosion in winter. In the 1980s, the dry stone masons' guild was threatened with extinction. And with it the preservation of the old mountain paths, explains González.

On the initiative of the island council, experts in traditional dry stone wall construction are being trained again today. The hiking route Ruta de Pedra en Sec is a project to promote hiking tourism in the most remote mountain regions of the island.
Slowly, the forest trail leads down from the Tramuntana mountains into the bay of Pollença. Oranges, figs, almonds, pears and apricots characterise the valley. Cross an old Roman bridge to reach the town centre with its magnificent mansions, palaces and parish church.
The last stage along the road is not necessary. The bus will do here if the longing to jump into the sea is too great. In the coming years, the dry stone wall path will be extended - and then end at the mystical Cape of Formentor.
